Norma Medley
Bio
Norma Medley is a South Florida–based contemporary oil painter whose paintings explore the tenderness, complexity, and emotional depth of Black women's inner lives. Raised in Staten Island, New York, and a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, she creates luminous paintings where figuration, abstraction, and natural forms intertwine through rich color, flowing forms, and symbolism.
Drawing inspiration from the women in her family, community, and memory, Medley's work invites viewers into moments of softness, intimacy, reflection, and celebration. Her paintings explore the emotional spaces that exist beyond likeness, creating images that feel both timeless and deeply personal.
Medley has exhibited in juried exhibitions and art festivals across Florida, and her work is held in private collections across the United States. She lives and works in South Florida.

Artist Statement
I honor women not as objects to be seen, but as souls to be felt.
Drawing from the women in my family, community, and memory, I create paintings that explore moments of softness, joy, intimacy, and quiet strength. Figures emerge through flowers, flowing fabric, and shifting atmosphere, where realism and abstraction meet to express not only the body, but presence itself.
Sometimes I paint the figure itself. Other times, I paint the feeling she leaves behind. Color, light, and symbolism become a language for what cannot always be spoken, allowing emotion to linger beyond likeness, where presence becomes the subject.
I am drawn to expressions of tenderness, vulnerability, and joy. My work creates space for Black women to be seen in the fullness of their humanity—with rich inner lives, quiet beauty, and moments of reflection, celebration, and rest.
I hope those who stand before my work experience a moment of recognition—a quiet pause where they see someone they love, see themselves, or simply encounter another life with greater care.
